Smoked Salmon and Egg Bagel for Kids
Ingredients for the homemade bagel:
  • 3 cups spelt flour
  • 7-9g dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • plant cream
  • chia seeds
  • tablespoon baking soda (optional)
Ingredients for the filling:
  • 1 egg
  • salt and pepper
  • smoked salmon strips
  • some lettuce
Method for the bagels:
  1. Mix together the dry ingredients in a bowl, and add the water. Knead for 10 minutes. If the dough is too flaky add some water, if it’s too sticky, add some flour.
  2. Apply some oil to a bowl and place the dough in the bowl. Cover it with a tea towel and leave it in a warm place for approximately 1 hour, until it has risen.
  3. Knead the dough for a short while and then form 6 equal balls.
  4. Poke a hole in the middle of each of them and make the shape bigger using you fingers.
  5. Cover again for another 20 minutes.
  6. Preheat the over at 220°C.
  7. Prepare a baking tray with a baking sheet and bring a big pot of water to a boil. Option: Add some baking soda and sugar to the water if you like a pretzel crust.
  8. Place the bagels one by one in the boiling water for about 30 seconds and then put them on the baking sheet.
  9. Glaze with plant cream and sprinkle with chia seeds.
  10. Bake for approximately 20 minutes.

Method for the filling:

  1. Fry an egg and a few strips of smoked salmon.
  2. Add the above and add some lettuce leaves to the bagel.

Tip: Batch make the bagels and store them in the freezer. When you need to use them, take out the dough and shape it into bagels. This will save you time.
